A Premium Wine Tour for a Premium Island, with Master of Wine Jo Ahearne

There are more astronauts than Masters of Wine, and even fewer with their own winery,

When the Ancient Greeks arrived on Hvar in 384 BC, they brought their vines with them. That’s right, 2,404 years of grape growing on the island – which is way before those pesky guys in Bordeaux started their craft. There are even some who say that vines were cultivated here before the Greeks arrived….. With its precipitous limestone slopes on the south side, the ancient UNESCO-protected fertile plain to the north, 2724 hours of sunshine a year and indigenous varieties aplenty, the island of Hvar is a prime location for viticulture and winemaking.

Hvar, the island of wine with a heritage dating back thousands of years, and named as one of the top 7 wine regions of the world for 2017 by Conde Nast. It is an island whose wines are exported as far away as California and China, whose vineyards boast several grape varieties indigenous only to the island, and whose Hvar Wine Association members include a talented and eclectic bunch of winemakers.

And in 2014, their ranks were swelled with the arrival of something truly unique in Croatia – a British Master of Wine who moved to Croati to make wine. And not just anywhere in Croatia, but the fabled southern slopes of Hvar.

Jo Ahearne’s journey to Hvar from her native London came via a distinguished career in Australia, a stint as head buyer at Harrods of London, and several choice positions long the way. Having wanted to make her own wine for a while, she eventually decided on Hvar, whose indigenous grapes and varied terroir seemed to provide the ideal challenge.

Her first wine was a Plavac Mali from the 2014 vintage, but the first wine to hit the market was a 2015 rosé from Hvar variety Darnekuša. Now based in Vrisnik and Stari Grad when not travelling, Jo has expanded her range and experimentation with Hvar’s varieties in the 2016 to now offer a much wider range.

From the last Hvar vintage, Jo will have 2016 Pošip which is made sur lie method, 2016 ‘Wild Skins’ (blend of Pošip, Bogdanuša and Kuć which is fermented on skins (macerated) with wild yeast and wild malolactic also sur lie), 2015/16 Rosina which a rosé made from Darnekuša and the 2014 ‘South Side’ Plavac Mali which is made from fruit grown on the south side of the island mostly around Sv Nedjelja and Jagodna and aged in new French barriques with a small amount of Slavonian oak.

Jo has kindly agreed to share her knowledge, wines and home with Hvar Wine Tours clients, and there will be two types of tour available with Jo – a fascinating opportunity for true wine enthusiasts to learn from a true wine expert.
